We Invite You To Join Us In Making Musical History

In 2011, the City of Asbury Park will launch an initiative to capture and promote all our great musical heritage since the City’s founding in 1897. This is a strategic plan to embrace all the extraordinary music that emanated from Asbury Park and leverage it to rebuild our city even in this very difficult economic climate. This philosophy was successfully implemented in cities like Memphis, Nashville, Austin, and Liverpool. We are looking for companies to help us underwrite this initiative. Asbury Park is uniquely positioned to achieve similar success and we are inviting you to become our partner in what promises to be an historic chapter in the continuing growth of the City.

We are now creating “Asbury Park Where Music Lives”, a year-long celebration of all the significant music that happened in the city and continues to happen today. Last year we applied, and were chosen by the Smithsonian Institute to launch the museum’s New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music, an exhibit that explores the growth of American music. The exhibit will come to Asbury Park in March of 2011 and it will be the first time the display will be staged in an urban city. We will also be the first stop on the New Harmonies 2011 tour. It is our intention to leverage the national exposure this exhibit will bring to the City and build a full year of events that will capture all of Asbury Park’s wonderful and rich musical history that includes bandleaders John Philip Sousa and Arthur Pryor, big-band leaders Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, jazz and blues greats like Count Basie, Billie Holiday. Lionel Hampton and modern musical icons, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi , Southside Johnny, and over a dozen young local bands and singers who are well recognized and on the radar. In addition, we will recognize City musical venues like the Convention Hall, Paramount Theatre, the Stone Pony, the Saint, the Wonder Bar, Asbury Lanes and the expected preservation of the old Upstage Club, all that continue to attract thousands of local, national and international visitors to the City every weekend. Three years ago, USA Today conducted a survey to discover the top ten American cities as the best places to listen to music and Asbury Park made the list! Asbury Park Where Music Lives will provide you with a once in a lifetime promotional opportunity to become part of an amazing “rising” of one of America’s great musical cities.
As part of this year long celebration we intent to:

  • Write and publish the musical heritage of Asbury Park
  • Stage and partner with over a hundred concerts
  • Attract international and local celebrities/musicians to participate
  • Create a documentary of the City’s musical heritage
  • Create a monthly lecture series featuring, musicians, craftsmen and writers
  • Stage and host musical art exhibits and shows
  • Host the most successful Smithsonian New Harmonies exhibit ever!
  • Create and distribute a New Harmonies educational curriculum
  • Create, license, and sell Asbury Park Musical Heritage merchandise
  • Establish a downtown office and exhibit space.
  • Hire an Executive Director to oversee the operation of next year’s event.
  • Host a Musical Memorabilia Expo
  • Create a documentary of the Asbury Park Where Music Lives 2011 Celebration
